James Bedell on Wednesday morning pleaded guilty to four federal counts of embezzling $138,303 from the city while he was Edwardsville's police chief.
Bedell must repay the money to Edwardsville and faces a sentence ranging from probation to as much as 10 years on each felony count.
"On your worst day you could face 40 years," U.S. District Judge Michael Reagan told Bedell.
The federal prosecutor went into the plea deal stating that it would make no sentencing recommendation. Bedell was told to surrender his passport and was ordered not to enter any gambling establishments.
As a convicted felon he cannot posses a gun or work in law enforcement. He had no prior felonies.
Details about how Bedell stole the money from the city and how he used the proceeds were not immediately available. Charges stated he took the money from 2009 to 2012, with each of the four embezzlement counts related to those four years.
Bedell resigned as Edwardsville's police chief in the fall, on the same day the FBI and Internal Revenue Service raided his home and office.
