NORTHBROOK — Enrique Guzman, the Northbrook patrol officer accused of stealing jewelry from a home in the community, has resigned from the force.

Guzman on Monday submitted his resignation and is no longer an employee of the village, said Cheryl Fayne-dePersio, the village’s communications manager.

The 12-year veteran of the Northbrook Police Department was charged with armed violence and burglary stemming from an incident where he allegedly stole jewelry from a home while investigating a report of an open door.

After a five-month investigation, Enrique Guzman, 34, of the 3400 block of N. Damen Ave., Chicago, was arrested Feb. 6 by fellow members of the Northbrook Police Department and FBI agents, according a release from Northbrook police.

Guzman was initially charged with armed violence because he was armed while allegedly committing a crime, residential burglary, and official misconduct, based upon knowingly committing those offenses while acting in his official capacity as a sworn police officer, police said.

He appeared in court for a bond hearing at the Skokie Courthouse Feb. 7, where his bond was set at $30,000, police said. Conditions of bond included turning in his firearms, FOID card and passport. Guzman will be put on electronic monitoring if he posts bond. At that time, he was placed on unpaid administrative leave.

His next court date is Feb. 22.
